And that is certainly one of the preferred ways to use a plasma set, given their superior image quality. However, there are times when it makes sense to purchase a smaller set, even when you want a home theater experience. If you are going to be watching your TV from less than about five feet away, for example, a four foot wide screen is much too wide. With a 32″ plasma TV the picture will still look nice and big at a distance of four feet, but considerably sharper than with a really big set of the same resolution.
In the smaller sizes, LCD sets are less expensive than their plasma counterparts, but the price difference is shrinking, so you should still go for the plasma if having the best picture possible is important to you. Movement is smoother, the blacks are darker, and if you sit at an angle from the screen the image doesn’t degrade as much. However, there are are only a very few models sold in sizes of 42″ or smaller, and only one plasma set is sold in the 32″ size. So if your TV is going to be in a very small room, get your 32 incher now while you still can! Below is a review of it.
The Vizio VP322 is a 32″ plasma TV set with a resolution of 720p. That’s less than the full 1080p of most bigger sets, but you don’t really need 1080p at this size. The remote control is fairly easy to use, but unfortunately to change the aspect ratio you have to go into some on-screen menus. The best thing about this set is the price of about $500. However, the quality of the picture suffers, and except for the darker blacks, it is no better than many LCD television sets that cost the same or less. If you are thinking of getting this one to save money, you should consider buying an LCD model, since there are so many more to choose from. You can improve the picture considerably by doing a custom calibration, but you can do that with LCD sets as well. The best reason to get the Vizio would be if you will often look at it from an angle, because even at this price the picture holds up better than even the best LCD sets when viewed from one side.
Since there is only the one 32″ plasma TV, if your room is small you should try to figure out a way to get the TV farther away so that a somewhat larger set would not be too big. Mounting one on a wall should get it far enough away, and it is not hard to do. Then you could get a great 1080p plasma model such as the 42″ Panasonic TC-P42G10.
